UV 101: Sun's Out, Skincare On!

Summer is officially here! Chances are you’re ready for the beach or a poolside vacay but as you soak up those rays, let's talk about something super important when it comes to your skin—UV rays. UV stands for ultraviolet, and while the name may sound cool, the effects it can have on your skin definitely are not! 

In this blog, your friends here at Avatara Skin are going to give you all the UV need-to-knows so that you can fully enjoy your summer plan as SAFELY as possible.

Let’s Talk Rays

UV rays come in three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Here's the lowdown on each:

  • UVA
These sneaky rays can penetrate deep into your skin, messing with things like collagen (which keeps your skin bouncy and firm). They're the ones responsible for premature aging, like wrinkles and sagging. Think “A” for aging!
  • UVB 
These are more on the surface —they're what give you that itchy, red (and painful!) sunburn. UVB rays play a big role in tanning, but too much can lead to long term skin damage and increase your risk of skin cancer. Think “B” for burning!
  • UVC
Luckily, these rays mostly get blocked by our ozone layer, so we don't need to worry as much as the others but some tools & equipment can also emit them so stay on the lookout. Think “C” for cosmic!

Fun in the Sun Requires Protection

Here's the deal: while sunshine feels amazing, too much UV exposure is a big no-no for your skin. But don’t worry – we’re not saying you need to hide from it entirely, just that you need to know how to best protect yourself! Here are some super simple ways to keep your skin safe, healthy, and happy when catching some rays:

  • Sunscreen:
Aka your bestie against UV rays. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (aka UVA & UVB protection) with SPF 30 or higher. Make sure your coveing your face, neck, and chest entirely and always remember to reapply — every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

  • Cover Up:
Hats and sunglasses aren't just for looking good (though they totally do). They shield your face and eyes from UV rays, so grab your favorites and style accordingly. Bonus points for wearing tightly woven fabrics to shield the rest of your body – especially if you’re going to be outdoors for a while.
  • Chill in the Shade: 
If the sun's blazing bright, find some shade – especially during the hours of 10am – 4pm when rays are at their strongest. It's a win-win—you get a break from the heat, and your skin gets a break from UV rays.
